How Does A Vegetarian Get Calcium Or Protein?

What does a vegetarian eat? Vegetarians eat such a wide variety of foods that it is easier to list what they do not eat. Vegetarians strictly avoid all meats. This includes fish, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, venison, veal, etc. They do however eat dairy and eggs. Vegetarians are sometimes referred to as “Lacto-ovo vegetarians” because they do consume dairy and eggs. Sometimes for health or environmental reasons, a person will avoid meat as well as eggs, dairy and even honey. This dietary style is called “vegan” and avoids any products that originate from animals.

Without meat, many people wonder how a vegetarian or vegan gets enough protein. What they don’t know is that the average American consumes more than their daily requirement of protein each day. Vegans and vegetarians keep their protein intake normal by consuming plenty of nuts, beans and seeds.

Legumes are the main source of protein for most vegetarians and vegans. Legumes come in many forms and can be prepared in a variety of ways.

Omitting meat from chili does not ruin the flavor. For those who do miss the taste of meat, there are imitation meat products that are made from plant products that contain more protein than real meat does. And just 1 cup of cooked beans delivers as much protein as 2 oz. of meat.

To get an adequate amount of calcium, vegans take supplements, drink orange juice fortified with calcium, eat soy products, and consume plenty of naturally occurring calcium found in beans and dark leafy greens. 1 cup of collard greens contains almost as much calcium as 1 cup of milk. Calcium is easier for people on lower protein diets to absorb, which makes it easier for vegans to consume their required daily amounts of calcium.
